U.S. President Barack Obama travels to the northern state of Wisconsin Wednesday to champion his goals for the nation that were outlined in his second State of the Union address. Late Tuesday, Mr. Obama used his speech to call for investments in innovation, research, development and infrastructure.

Speaking in the House chamber of the U.S. Capitol, President Obama addressed the economic situation and said the United States is poised for progress. But he said the country has to do more to ensure its leadership and competitiveness in the future. He said investments in research and education can greatly benefit the United States, noting that the Soviets beat the United States into space in 1957 with the launch of a satellite called Sputnik but that U.S. investments later allowed the U.S. to win the race to the moon. He said those investments "unleashed a wave of innovation" that created new industries and millions of jobs. He said the current generation is at its "Sputnik" moment.

On his health care reform -- which Republicans say they want to repeal and replace -- he said he is open to ideas for improving the law, but he is not willing to do away with the aspects that he says have improved insurance coverage.
