U.S. President Barack Obama is set to unveil a proposed federal budget for 2012 that will seek to cut the federal deficit by $1.1 trillion over 10 years.

Mr. Obama is sending his $3.5 trillion budget to Congress Monday, as the U.S. faces a record deficit of more than $1.6 trillion this year.

White House budget chief Jacob Lew said Sunday the proposal would cut the deficit in half by the end of Mr. Obama's first term in 2013.

The proposed budget reductions are more than double the $400 billion of cuts in non-essential programs the president unveiled in his State of the Union address last month. The cuts include trimming energy subsidies for the poor and some infrastructure programs.

The president is also seeking to increase revenues by reducing tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans.

On Saturday, Mr. Obama said the budget plan "asks Washington to live within its means."

Republicans have criticized the proposal, saying it does little to reduce the deficit. The Republicans want to slash domestic spending to the levels of 2008, the year Mr. Obama was elected.
