[ti:Money, Part 3] [ar:Faith Lapidus] [al:WORDS AND THEIR STORIES] [by:www.51voa.com] [00:00.00]Now, the VOA [00:12.26]Special English program [00:14.55]WORDS AND THEIR STORIES. [00:17.04]Most people enjoy working [00:19.77]for several reasons. [00:21.81]Their job might be fun, [00:24.25]or they like their employer [00:26.44]and the other people at work. [00:28.74]Most people I know, however, [00:31.63]work for the money. [00:33.62]I do not know anyone [00:36.50]who is loaded, or extremely rich. [00:39.59]Most of my friends work [00:42.68]to earn enough money to live. [00:45.37]They have to make ends meet. [00:48.11]They have to earn enough money [00:50.65]to pay for the things they need. [00:53.63]Some even live from hand to mouth. [00:57.17]They only have enough money [00:59.74]for the most important things. [01:02.18]They struggle to earn enough [01:05.57]money to bring home the bacon. [01:08.40]It can be difficult [01:10.79]to earn enough money [01:12.59]for a family to survive. [01:14.78]Sometimes, poor people [01:18.12]even get caught short. [01:20.51]They do not have enough money [01:23.50]to pay for what they need. [01:25.99]Or they have to spend [01:28.73]or lay out more money than [01:31.91]they want for something. [01:33.01]When this happens, [01:34.85]poor people have to tighten [01:37.81]their belts and live [01:39.70]on less money than usual. [01:42.04]I hate when I have to live [01:45.32]on less money. [01:46.37]It takes me longer [01:48.31]to get back on my feet, [01:50.45]or return to good financial health. [01:54.48]However, other people [01:57.46]are on the gravy train. [01:59.71]They get paid more money [02:02.45]than their job is worth. [02:04.54]These people make a bundle. [02:07.77]They really rake in the cash. [02:10.76]In fact, they make so much money [02:15.29]that they can live high off the hog. [02:18.88]They own the best of everything [02:22.07]and live in great ease. [02:24.41]Sometimes they pay an arm [02:27.65]and a leg for something. [02:29.54]Because money is no object [02:32.98]to wealthy people, [02:34.33]they will pay high prices [02:36.52]for whatever they want. [02:38.62]Sometimes, they even pay [02:41.31]through the nose. [02:42.50]They pay too much for things. [02:44.95]I am not rich. I did not [02:49.83]make a killing in the stock market [02:52.44]when my stocks increased in value. [02:55.08]Yet, I am not poor either. [02:58.61]When I go out with friends, [03:01.15]I do not want to shell out [03:03.74]or pay a lot of money. [03:05.78]Often, my friends and I will chip in [03:09.46]or pay jointly for a fun night out. [03:12.95]When we go to restaurants [03:15.50]the meal is Dutch treat. [03:18.08]Each person pays his [03:20.72]or her own share. [03:22.46]Once, the owner of a restaurant [03:26.30]gave us a dinner on the house. [03:29.14]We did not have to pay [03:31.79]for our meals. [03:32.83]However, I admit that we had [03:36.32]to grease someone's palm. [03:38.09]We had to pay money to the employee [03:41.27]who led us to our table. [03:43.22]The money was for a special request. [03:46.36]Yes, it was a buy off. [03:49.79]The employee put us at the top [03:53.23]of the list for a table instead [03:56.01]of making us wait like everyone else. [03:59.15]We had a great time that night [04:02.21]and the meal did not [04:04.10]set me back at all. [04:06.24]I did not have to pay anything. [04:09.67]Because of that experience, [04:12.92]I will always remember [04:14.62]that nice things still happen [04:17.71]in a world that is driven by money. [04:20.20]But, that is just my two cents worth. [04:24.24]It is just my opinion.
