[ti:Men and Women Really Do Think Differently] [ar:Anna Matteo] [al:Health Report] [by:www.51voa.com] [00:00.00]From VOA Learning English, [00:02.92]this is the Health Report. [00:06.04]Raise your hand if this story sounds familiar. [00:10.85]A man enters a store to buy milk. [00:15.22]He walks out of the store with milk. [00:19.48]That is all -- milk. [00:22.32]At the same time, [00:24.33]a woman enters the same grocery store also to buy milk. [00:31.10]She buys it. [00:32.95]But, she also buys chicken [00:36.51]and lemons to make dinner that night. [00:39.37]Then she remembers to buy food for her son to eat at school. [00:45.02]She also gets a bottle of wine for drinks with friends [00:49.89]and a birthday card for her husband's niece. [00:53.84]Then she gets coffee for breakfast, [00:56.71]ice cream for dessert and remembers stamps to mail the bills. [01:02.20]And don't forget soap for the bathroom. [01:04.92]And that is the difference between the female [01:10.72]and male brains simply explained in a grocery store. [01:16.30]Generally speaking, men do one thing at a time. [01:23.50]Women do many. [01:26.26]Doing many things at one time is often called "multi-tasking," [01:32.82]a very popular word these days. [01:35.80]Now scientific research supports this theory about male and female brains. [01:43.46]A recent study has confirmed what we have known all along [01:49.41]¨C men and women think differently. [01:53.92]Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania [01:59.13]studied brain images of 949 people aged from eight to 22 years old. [02:09.85]They found that male brains have more connections [02:14.65]on one side of the brain, or hemisphere. [02:19.56]In the female brain, they found more activity and connections [02:25.47]between the right and left sides of the brain. [02:29.87]The left side of the brain is known as the side of "reason." [02:36.18]The right hemisphere is known as the "creative" side. [02:42.14]Regina Verma is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. [02:48.74]She co-wrote the report. [02:51.55]She says when women are asked to do something difficult [02:56.52]they might use different parts of the brain. [03:00.34]Men, she adds, generally use just one side of the brain. [03:06.70]As a result, men generally deal directly with a problem. [03:12.40]There is a strong connection between the "understanding" [03:18.00]and the "action" parts of their brains. [03:22.06]Women, however, might include other parts of the brain, [03:27.37]like the part connected with reason and the part connected [03:32.58]with sensitivity when solving a problem. [03:36.08]Women take a less direct path to find a solution. [03:40.99]Dr. Verma warns that the study should not lead anyone [03:46.21]to expect some behaviors from women and others from men. [03:52.32]And that's the Health Report, from VOA Learning English. [03:57.04]I'm Anna Matteo.
