[00:09.96]Public opinion studies show strong support for two candidates in each party. [00:17.56]Businessman Donald Trump leads Senator Ted Cruz in the Republican race. [00:24.84]Hillary Clinton leads Senator Bernie Sanders in the Democratic race. [00:31.36]But both races are close. [00:34.80]Although Sanders is running as a Democrat, he is an independent. [00:40.20]He calls himself a democratic socialist. [00:44.64]This voting in states like Iowa is called a caucus. [00:50.60]A caucus lets voters of each political party ¨C Democrat and Republican [00:57.52]¨C say who they favor or prefer at this time. [01:02.88]Candidates who win the support of voters in Iowa do not always win the presidency. [01:10.20]In 1980, Ronald Reagan lost the Iowa vote [01:15.20]but became the Republican party nominee. He won the presidency. [01:21.16]There are 12 Republican candidates and three Democratic candidates. [01:28.48]On Sunday, many of the candidates held events throughout Iowa. [01:33.80]They spoke to their supporters and strongly criticized their opponents. [01:40.68]Trump and Cruz are both trying to gain the support of the many Iowans [01:47.40]who have strong Christian religious beliefs. [01:51.12]Also on Sunday, Sanders and Clinton reached an agreement [01:56.56]with Democratic party officials to have more debates. [02:02.12]Many people in the party had asked for them. [02:07.20]The next primary election will take place February 9 [02:12.04]in the northeastern state of New Hampshire.
