[00:07.40]The games are a sports competition, [00:10.72]similar to the Olympics, for former soldiers injured in combat. [00:16.80]Britain's Prince Harry started the games in 2014. [00:22.40]He also served in the British military for 10 years. [00:26.88]That time included two tours of duty in Afghanistan. [00:33.04]At the end of his military service, he founded the games. [00:38.32]The first competition was in London. [00:41.44]Harry said the games serve as motivation for wounded soldiers working their way back to health. [00:49.44]The games take place over five days and include 10 competitions. [00:56.16]Closing ceremonies are May 12. [00:59.64]Fifteen countries are sending athletes to the event. [01:04.20]They include Great Britain, the United States, Canada, [01:10.48]Australia, New Zealand, Jordan and Afghanistan. [01:17.16]More than 500 athletes are attending. [01:21.36]The athletes compete in events like archery, cycling, volleyball, [01:28.16]driving, swimming, rugby, weight lifting and indoor rowing. [01:36.80]In a video message announcing the 2016 games, [01:42.24]Prince Harry said the first games [01:46.20]"focused the recovery of hundreds of wounded servicemen and women through sport [01:53.88]... and inspired many hundreds more." [01:57.88]In another video, Prince Harry says the goal is to use [02:03.84]the Invictus Games as a way for wounded soldiers [02:08.72]to "get up off the sofa, dare themselves to do something, [02:13.88]whether it's sport, whatever it is." [02:17.28]William Reynolds is the captain of the team from the United States. [02:22.68]He was injured by shrapnel from a bomb in Baghdad, Iraq in 2004. [02:30.32]Reynolds recovered well enough to return to duty, [02:34.56]but had his left leg amputated in 2013. [02:39.52]Reynolds competed in short running [02:42.64]and longer cycling events at the Invictus Games in 2014 [02:49.00]and is competing in the same events this year. [02:52.36]In an interview with Fox Sports, [02:56.04]he said competing at Invictus is a good goal for people recovering from war injuries. [03:03.12]Getting ready for a competition [03:05.72]provides purpose for people who may be tired of physical therapy. [03:11.68]"Adaptive sports helped me become an athlete again," Reynolds said. [03:17.28]The name Invictus comes from a 19th-century poem [03:22.40]by English poet William Ernest Henley. [03:27.04]It includes these lines: [03:30.20]"I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul." [03:35.96]In Latin, the word invictus means unconquered. [03:40.92]I'm Dan Friedell.
