[00:04.28]The members of the Electoral College will cast their votes to uphold [00:10.28]November's presidential election on December 19. [00:15.45]They are known as electors. [00:19.76]Their part in presidential elections is described in the U.S. Constitution [00:26.28]and in the 12th Amendment to the Constitution. [00:31.32]Many people on Twitter are using the hashtag #EsteemedElectors [00:37.48]in a last attempt to ask electors to vote for someone other than Donald Trump. [00:46.04]Actor Josh Gad wrote: "Have courage. Protect our democracy. [00:53.12]This is your right and your duty." [00:57.96]Other actors, including Martin Sheen, who played the president on television, [01:04.76]speak directly to Republican members of the Electoral College in a video. [01:11.88]They say Donald Trump is not qualified to be president. [01:17.84]They suggested that the electors choose a person who is qualified, [01:23.88]and added that it does not have to be Hillary Clinton. [01:29.12]Many Trump supporters are saying the Electoral College members [01:34.16]should follow the wishes of the people in their state. [01:38.80]One person asked: "How do we know #EsteemedElectors [01:45.44]isn't a Russian operation to influence our election?" [01:50.64]The recent news that Russian hackers may have influenced the U.S. presidential election [01:56.88]has raised concerns among many people. [02:00.60]Some are saying the electors need more information before casting their votes. [02:07.28]One of those people is Virginia congressman Don Beyer. [02:12.72]He said the Electoral College should delay its vote [02:16.96]until its members can receive information [02:20.20]from the Central Intelligence Agency about Russia's effect on the election. [02:27.28]Some electors sent an open letter to the Director of National Intelligence [02:33.72]James Clapper asking for more details. [02:38.84]They want to know if Russian interference is being investigated [02:44.32]and whether the hackers were connected with the Trump campaign. [02:49.40]In most election years, the Electoral College votes are a routine part of the process. [02:57.96]The people who vote usually follow the popular vote in their state. [03:04.04]This year, one elector has already said he will not follow his state's vote. [03:10.44]That is Christopher Suprun of Texas. [03:14.48]He wrote an opinion article in the New York Times recently [03:19.60]explaining that he would not vote for Trump. [03:23.52]Suprun's lone vote against Trump will not make a difference in the results. [03:29.80]If the remaining electors follow the wishes of their state, [03:34.08]Trump will receive more than the required 270 votes. [03:39.56]And that's What's Trending Today.
