[00:10.92]The meeting had been planned for next week. [00:16.84]Pena Nieto acted shortly after Trump posted on Twitter [00:23.52]about plans for building a wall between Mexico and the U.S. [00:30.88]Trump tweeted early Thursday, [00:34.12]"If Mexico is unwilling to pay for the badly needed wall, [00:39.96]then it would be better to cancel the upcoming meeting." [00:46.12]Pena Nieto later tweeted, [00:49.68]"This morning we informed the White House that I will not attend [00:54.96]the work meeting planned for next Tuesday with @POTUS." [01:01.92]POTUS stands for President of the United States. [01:07.44]Trump administration official Sean Spicer said: [01:11.92]"We'll look for a date to schedule something in the future." [01:17.44]And he added, "We will keep the lines of communication open." [01:24.00]Jorge Castaneda served as Mexico's foreign relations secretary under its former administration. [01:35.28]In his words, "Pena Nieto has no other choice but to say 'I'm not going.'" [01:44.76]Tensions have increased between the two countries [01:48.52]since Trump launched his campaign in 2015. [01:53.76]Trump had said immigrants from Mexico brought drugs and crime into the U.S. [02:02.04]He promised to build a wall to stop them and said Mexico would pay for it. [02:11.48]The new U.S. President has also blamed Mexico for taking jobs away from Americans. [02:21.12]He wants to re-negotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement or NAFTA. [02:29.52]Calling it a "total disaster," he said it costs the U.S. as much as [02:37.08]$60 billion each year in trade deficits to Mexico. [02:45.04]On Wednesday, Trump signed an order to build the wall [02:50.04]as Mexico's Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray [02:54.76]arrived for a meeting with the White House staff. [02:59.56]Republican leaders of the U.S. Congress estimated the cost of building the wall [03:06.72]would be between $10 billion to $20 billion. [03:13.44]Trump said the U.S. will finance the wall initially. [03:19.36]But, he said Mexico will repay the United States. [03:26.48]"There will be a payment, it will be in a form, perhaps a complicated form," [03:34.00]Trump said in an interview with ABC News. [03:39.40]Late in the day, a White House spokesman said [03:44.20]that Trump is calling for a 20 percent tax [03:50.20]on imports from Mexico to pay for the wall. [03:55.68]I'm Anne Ball.
