[00:08.64]I'm Ashley Thompson. [00:10.32]And here with me in studio is Learning English reporter John Russell. [00:16.20]Hi Ashley. You're right. [00:18.72]We're going to get a workout today [00:21.20]thanks to Learning English fan Raphael Duarte. [00:24.88]He posted a suggestion for us on our website. [00:29.48]He wrote: I would like you guys to talk [00:32.24]about working out at the gym, [00:34.60]terms, routines or stuff related to it." [00:39.52]John, I have heard that you work out a lot. [00:42.92]Do you belong to a gym? [00:45.40]First, let's explain that word -- gym. [00:48.76]Gym is the short form of the word gymnasium, [00:52.84]a room or building with space and equipment [00:55.96]for indoor sports activities. [00:58.64]Most American schools have gymnasiums [01:01.44]where students can exercise. [01:03.80]Right, and there are also private gyms. [01:07.48]People pay money to belong to them. [01:10.48]Private gyms might include trainers [01:13.20]who can help you learn how to best use the gym's equipment [01:17.36]– like weights, treadmills and rowing machines. [01:21.76]So, do you belong to one of those gyms? [01:25.88]I belong to a rock climbing gym. [01:28.44]It has wide, tall walls. [01:30.84]You literally climb the walls [01:33.04]– in a safe way, of course. [01:35.24]It is a fun way to get some exercise. [01:38.72]And it is a good way to get in shape. [01:41.68]So, when Americans use "shape" this way, [01:45.04]it is related to fitness, or just overall health. [01:50.20]If someone has not exercised much in a long time, [01:54.24]they might describe themselves as "out of shape." [01:58.60]Then when they start working out again, [02:01.40]they might say they are "getting back in shape." [02:05.76]Right. So, before I start rock climbing, [02:09.16]I make sure to "warm up." [02:11.48]That means to prepare yourself [02:13.76]for a difficult or intense activity by stretching. [02:17.74]"Work out" and "warm up" are phrasal verbs, [02:22.24]everyone's favorite! [02:24.48]That's true. A phrasal verb is a group of words that act as a verb. [02:30.12]It is made up of a verb as well as a preposition, adverb or both. [02:36.12]Hmm, there are a lot of phrasal verbs in the world of exercise, actually. [02:41.84]Here is another one: [02:43.60]some people exercise because they want to "bulk up." [02:48.52]This is another way of saying you want to grow your muscles, [02:53.20]or become more muscular and strong. [02:56.44]People who are trying to bulk up [02:58.76]might do a lot of reps on the weights machines. [03:01.92]Reps...that sounds like it might be short for something! [03:06.32]Right! "Reps" is short for "repetition." [03:09.84]As you might be able to guess, [03:11.88]this means the act of repeating the same exercise a number of times. [03:17.36]Not everyone works out just to bulk up, of course. [03:21.52]Some people might have a goal of "slimming down," [03:25.68]this is another phrasal verb. [03:28.20]"Slim" means to make smaller, or thinner. [03:31.96]So to "slim down" means to lose weight. [03:36.16]People who hope to "slim down" [03:38.48]might run or swim as part of their workout routine. [03:42.60]"Routine" is actually one of the words [03:45.71]that our friend Raphael asked us about. [03:48.88]"Routine" in this case just means a usual way of [03:53.16]doing things, in a set order. [03:56.04]You might have a morning routine, [03:58.52]a study routine, or, of course, a workout routine. [04:03.40]So, if you work out regularly, [04:06.04]describe your workout routine to us in the comments section! [04:10.96]I can think of another phrasal verb [04:13.16]that relates to what you should do after you work out. [04:17.36]I think I know it – "cool down!" [04:20.96]Exactly. To "cool down" means to do easy exercises [04:24.97]after doing an intense exercise. [04:27.84]This lets your heart rate drop slowly. [04:30.96]It is always smart to cool down. [04:34.20]Well, I think this episode of Words to the Wise is cooling down, too. [04:38.84]Thanks everyone for listening, and as always, [04:42.00]let us know if you have ideas [04:44.48]for us for our next episode of Words to the Wise. [04:47.68]Leave us a comment, and let us know where you are from. [04:51.56]I'm Ashley Thompson. [04:53.08]And I'm John Russell. [04:54.56]更多听力请访问51VOA.COM
