[00:03.65]For the 27th year, the most popular purebred dog in America [00:10.84]is the Labrador retriever. [00:14.92]But other breeds, or kinds of dogs, [00:18.48]are quickly gaining in the chase for popularity, [00:23.16]especially the French bulldog. [00:27.48]Frenchies, as they are also called, [00:30.72]are now the number-four dog in the country. [00:34.67]Coming in second is the German shepherd. [00:39.48]The golden retriever is third. [00:42.92]The American Kennel Club released its latest dog rankings Wednesday. [00:50.88]Also in the top 10 are the bulldog, beagle, poodle, Rottweiler, [01:00.48]Yorkshire terrier and the German shorthaired pointer. [01:06.16]The lovable Lab has ruled as America's top dog longer than any other. [01:14.32]And the friendly beagle is the only dog that has made the AKC's [01:20.92]top 10 list every year since the club's founding in 1884. [01:29.72]The Frenchie's fast rise The French bulldog has risen [01:32.00]from 76th place to fourth in just 20 years. [01:38.44]It ranked sixth in the 1910s and again in 2015-2016. [01:47.52]French bulldogs are wide and low to the ground. [01:52.24]Their large ears and funny, flat noses have become favorites in big cities. [02:00.16]Frenchies are generally small, quiet dogs. [02:04.76]Their rise in popularity has come in part [02:08.96]from the breeds' inclusion in movies and advertisements. [02:15.68]Many Hollywood stars also own Frenchies. [02:20.56]Frenchie lovers may like the growing interest in the breed, [02:26.04]but they also worry about dishonest breeders and under-informed owners. [02:33.88]Kerry Boyd breeds Frenchies in the state of Massachusetts. [02:40.76]"It scares me that because it's popular, everybody wants it. [02:46.72]But not every family is right for a French bulldog," she told the Associated Press. [02:54.05]The breed made news this month when a Frenchie puppy died on an airplane. [03:02.48]An airline employee forced a passenger [03:06.24]to put the dog into a small, closed baggage area. [03:12.24]The death led to discussion of breathing problems common [03:16.64]among breeds with especially flat noses. [03:22.32]Frenchies are also at risk of overheating and of having nose [03:27.36]and mouth problems that require surgery. [03:31.60]They also often must be born by cesarean section because of their big heads. [03:39.84]In 2015, New York's The Village Voice magazine [03:44.60]published a cover of a photograph of a Frenchie. [03:48.51]That cover said "Don't Buy This Dog." [03:53.14]Dr. John de Jong is an animal doctor in Massachusetts. [03:59.96]He sees Frenchies' problems up close. [04:04.26]But he notes that other breeds have conditions of their own. [04:10.12]"I would say to anybody purchasing a breed of any kind: [04:15.32]Do their homework," says de Jong. [04:20.08]The AKC is the nation's oldest purebred dog registry. [04:26.08]The American Veterinary Medical Association [04:30.48]estimates there are about 70 million pet dogs in the United States, [04:36.68]and over 74 million pet cats. [04:41.80]And that's What's Trending Today. [04:45.16]I'm Bryan Lynn. 更多听力请访问51VOA.COM
