[00:14.92]His administration says it is giving trade negotiators [00:20.36]30 more days to work out a deal. [00:25.36]The exemptions were to have ended on Tuesday May 1. [00:33.20]The tariffs have already been put into effect on China and Russia. [00:40.92]But the European Union (EU), Canada and Mexico received exemptions [00:47.60]from tariffs on their aluminum and steel exports to the U.S. [00:55.92]The European Commission criticized the temporary extension in a statement Tuesday. [01:04.28]The group said the EU has been willing to discuss the issue [01:09.84]and "will not negotiate under threat." [01:15.60]The commission said, "The U.S. decision prolongs market uncertainty, [01:22.56]which is already affecting business decisions." [01:27.36]It added that the tariffs, which are meant to protect U.S. industry, [01:33.76]cannot be justified by national security concerns. [01:39.96]German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke to Trump last week [01:46.56]during a visit to the White House. [01:50.36]She warned that trade relations between the allies [01:55.60]could worsen if the EU does not receive a permanent exemption. [02:03.32]On Monday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau [02:08.08]warned against placing tariffs on his country's steel and aluminum. [02:15.16]He said such measures could hurt the U.S. car and aerospace industries, [02:22.16]which depend on imported materials. [02:27.44]Late Monday, the U.S. announced that it had reached a final deal with South Korea, [02:34.92]which will receive a permanent exemption from the tariffs. [02:40.76]It said that early agreements had been reached with Argentina, Australia and Brazil. [02:51.36]The Trump administration has said [02:54.16]that some countries sell their steel and aluminum at unfairly low prices. [03:01.88]And President Donald Trump has said this competition [03:06.52]hurts U.S. industries that are important to national security. [03:13.96]The U.S. has placed a 25 percent tax on many steel imports [03:21.08]and a 10 percent tax on aluminum as a result. [03:28.12]I'm Mario Ritter. [03:30.00]更多听力请访问51VOA.COM
