[00:02.50]Germany is out of the World Cup. [00:06.60]The defending champions lost to South Korea 2-0 on Wednesday. [00:13.03]Germany ended up last in Group F. [00:18.12]Sweden and Mexico advanced from that group to the round of 16. [00:23.79]South Korea did not advance despite its surprising victory over Germany. [00:30.66]It is the first time since 1938 that Germany [00:35.91]has not advanced out of the group stage of World Cup play. [00:41.22]All four Group F teams had a chance to advance Wednesday. [00:47.07]Their chances depended on the results of the other match. [00:52.00]The two matches were played at the same time, [00:55.56]one in Yekaterinburg, Russia, and the other in Kazan, Russia. [01:01.59]Sweden beat Mexico 3-0, winning the group. [01:06.63]That result put Germany in a good position to advance, as well. [01:11.81]All the Germans needed to do was to score one goal against the South Koreans. [01:18.18]German defender Mats Hummels said after the match, [01:23.06]"It's very very hard to put it into words. [01:26.70]We believed until the end today, [01:29.73]even when it was 0-1. [01:32.52]I think we kept trying to turn it all around." [01:36.44]After watching their team play poorly against Sweden, [01:41.45]the mood among Mexico fans at the game improved [01:45.61]when news came in that South Korean goalkeeper Joe Hyeon-woo [01:50.94]was preventing Germany from scoring. [01:53.89]Then, Mexicans at the game -- and around the world - [01:58.72]- cheered wildly when South Korea scored its first goal. [02:03.82]In a Twitter video taken by VOA reporter Ramon Taylor, [02:09.38]Mexican fans at an eating-place in New York City [02:13.56]shouted in Spanish "CO-RE-A" after South Korea scored its first goal. [02:20.35]In another Twitter video taken in Mexico City's Zocalo Square, [02:25.99]Mexican fans found a South Korean man among the crowd. [02:30.54]The fans cheered for him and lifted him above the masses. [02:35.50]The person filming the video, Patrick Infurna, [02:39.71]says "Only the World Cup could do this. [02:42.71]Only the World Cup could make this happen." [02:45.79]Besides Germany this year, France in 2002, Italy in 2010 and Spain in 2014 [02:55.80]also got eliminated in the group stage as defending champions.
