[00:09.12]The people, a Muslim minority in Myanmar, [00:13.48]fled the military's campaign of violence against them. [00:19.28]Now, they face another threat: monsoon rains. [00:26.19]The intensity and speed of the rain [00:30.32]cause landslides and serious flooding in the camps. [00:36.24]The problem is made worse [00:39.00]because many refugees take shelter on hills. [00:44.92]But trees no longer hold the soil in place. [00:50.52]They have been cut down to clear space and provide wood for shelters. [00:57.88]The roots have been cut for firewood. [01:02.04]When the rains come, the water turns the soil into heavy mud [01:07.84]that slides down the hill and covers anything in its way. [01:14.52]One man, named Mohamed Alom, [01:18.12]was asleep in his shelter last month [01:21.68]when mud slid through the plastic wall beside him. [01:27.12]A tree root cut his head. [01:31.12]In another slide, a 60-year-old woman [01:35.16]was buried to the top of her legs in mud. [01:40.40]One child has already died as a result of heavy rains, [01:45.68]and thirty more people have been injured, [01:49.28]says the group that oversees aid workers in the camp. [01:54.36]The Inter Sector Coordination Group, or ISCG, [02:00.96]also says that more than 200,000 people are living in areas believed [02:09.20]to be in danger of landslides and flooding. [02:13.16]The most intense rain is expected over the next few months. [02:20.20]Officials have been able to clear some land in the camp and make it flat, [02:27.72]but the area does not have enough space for everyone. [02:33.20]About 34,000 people have moved to new shelters farther away. [02:40.68]However, many now struggle to find firewood [02:45.20]because they live far from the mountains, [02:49.72]and they do not have money for travel to the markets. [02:54.84]Mohamed Alom, marked from the cut on his head, [02:59.20]is currently living in a one-room school house with 12 other people. [03:05.44]He says he is hoping officials will help build him a new shelter. [03:11.72]But, he says, he has no idea how long that will take. [03:17.92]However, Alom notes that the Rohingya refugees [03:22.72]have faced threats more serious than rain, [03:27.04]including mass killings, rapes, and other abuse [03:32.68]at the hands of soldiers in Myanmar. [03:36.20]He said, "Here, even if there's a landslide, [03:41.12]at least we don't have to worry about the military." [03:45.40]I'm Kelly Jean Kelly. [03:47.28]更多听力请访问51VOA.COM
