[00:10.96]The family of the Republican Party's 2008 presidential nominee [00:17.20]and former prisoner of war announced the decision Friday. [00:23.36]They said "With his usual strength of will, [00:28.28]he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment." [00:34.68]His wife Cindy posted a message on Twitter: [00:39.36]"I love my husband with all of my heart. [00:43.28]God bless everyone who has cared for my husband along this journey." [00:51.00]In July 2017, doctors found the cancerous growth and operated on McCain. [01:00.00]Two weeks later, McCain returned to the Senate floor. [01:06.16]He cast the deciding vote against a Republican measure [01:10.76]to end the Affordable Care Act, or ObamaCare. [01:17.04]Republican President Donald Trump criticized that decision. [01:22.72]He and McCain have had long-standing disagreements. [01:28.80]During his campaign, Trump also questioned the senator's public image as a war hero, [01:37.36]saying of McCain's past, "I like people who weren't captured." [01:44.48]McCain flew for the navy. [01:47.60]His plane was shot down during the war in Vietnam. [01:52.64]He was imprisoned, kept in isolation, and tortured by the North Vietnamese. [02:00.68]He refused to give the North Vietnamese any military information. [02:06.88]McCain was finally released after the cease-fire [02:12.04]along with other American prisoners of war on March 14, 1973. [02:20.88]McCain retired from the Navy. [02:24.20]He has served in Congress representing Arizona since 1982. [02:31.96]He has been absent because of his medical condition since December. [02:38.76]The 81-year-old McCain has seven children, four with his wife Cindy Hensley, [02:46.08]and three from his first marriage to Carol Shepp. [02:51.60]After the announcement Friday, [02:53.88]former Connecticut Sen.
