[00:11.92]Coyotes are wild animals that are related to dogs and wolves. [00:18.28]They are found in North America. [00:22.96]Many people living in cold-weather places around the world [00:28.44]wear coats designed with furry edges that circle the head and neck. [00:35.61]Many clothing companies use coyote fur [00:40.27]from the United States to create these kinds of coats. [00:46.24]Coyote fur is a favored choice because it is naturally full, [00:51.96]soft and has beautiful colors. [00:55.92]A good coyote from the western United States [01:00.80]is highly valued and can sell for at least $100. [01:07.88]One top price at a recent sale in Colorado reached $170. [01:15.50]That was up 40 percent from four years ago. [01:20.64]John Hughes is a longtime buyer [01:24.80]at J and M Furs in Roundup, Montana. [01:30.16]He spoke to the Associated Press about the current demand for fur. [01:35.80]"Coyotes are hot," he said. "And it's all due to the trim trade." [01:44.32]The best time for trapping coyotes is in late fall [01:49.00]and early winter, when coyote coats are at their fullest. [01:54.40]But a lot of the selling happens in late winter. [01:59.68]Much of the fur is sold at big auction houses in Canada. [02:05.40]Local sales are also held in areas near where the animals are caught. [02:11.73]One such auction was recently held [02:16.05]in the small town of Herkimer, New York. [02:20.06]People gathered in a local community center there [02:23.80]to take part in the auction. [02:27.28]Tables inside were filled with hundreds of furs [02:31.16]from coyotes and other animals. [02:35.00]The selection included muskrats, beavers, [02:38.76]mink, fox, otters and bobcats. [02:44.40]Fur experts say the increase in demand [02:47.97]for coyote fur started with coats made [02:51.40]by Canadian clothing company Canada Goose. [02:56.32]The coats are recognizable by the company's official design [03:00.75]that shows the Arctic Circle. [03:04.72]Canada Goose coats saw a big jump in sales in 2013. [03:10.96]It happened after American model Kate Upton [03:14.68]wore one of the company's coats over her swimsuit [03:18.64]in a photo that appeared in the U.S. magazine Sports Illustrated. [03:25.12]Over the years, more famous people and their fans [03:29.16]have also chose to wear the fur-lined coats. [03:33.52]Canada Goose coats can now sell for up to $1,000. [03:39.92]Mark Downey heads Canada's [03:43.40]Fur Harvesters Auction company in North Bay, Ontario. [03:49.68]"Canada Goose is always the name [03:52.40]that people relate to," he told the AP. [03:55.92]"But there are so many other brands that make similar coats." [04:02.32]Downey said that most of these kinds of coats [04:05.76]include coyote trim around the neck of the coat. [04:11.44]Downey predicts the large demand for coyote fur will continue. [04:18.04]Another seller is North American Fur Auctions, [04:21.72]based in Toronto, Canada. [04:25.36]In a statement published on its website in November, [04:29.16]the company said the coyote trim business [04:32.32]"continues to be in full fashion, [04:35.28]with Canada Goose being the major taker." [04:40.40]The hot market for coyotes comes as trappers deal [04:44.76]with recent economic downturns in both China and Russia. [04:50.72]They also face competition from people raising animals for fur. [04:55.96]In addition, animal rights activists [05:00.12]call the trapping process cruel.
