[00:13.28]The dog, named Hurricane, is a Belgian Malinois. [00:18.65]He was honored with the rarely-given Order of Merit award from a British aid group. [00:26.92]Hurricane is the first animal from a foreign country to receive the honor. [00:34.32]The aid group is called the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals. [00:41.20]The group provides free and low-cost medical care to animals and owners in need. [00:49.56]Its director, Jan McLoughlin, said the Order of Merit award [00:55.20]is equal to royal recognition for humans. [01:01.20]"It's given for animals who show distinguished service for society, [01:06.60]who go above and beyond that level of human and animal companionship," McLoughlin said. [01:16.00]Hurricane was a highly trained member of the Secret Service [01:20.86]working as a guard dog under President Barack Obama. [01:26.92]In October 2014, an intruder climbed over the White House fence [01:32.92]during a night when Obama and his family were at home. [01:38.56]The intruder was able to resist the first guard dog team that attacked. [01:45.00]Hurricane and his trainer, Special Operations Officer Marshall Mirarchi, [01:51.72]were performing support duties that night. [01:56.00]So Mirarchi deployed Hurricane. [01:59.15]"The second he got target lock, I sent him," Mirarchi told VOA. [02:06.56]"He weaved through our teammates and took the individual down." [02:13.28]But, first the intruder hit, kicked and threw Hurricane through the air. [02:19.96]"The individual wasn't responding to any pain for whatever reason. [02:24.52]So, I had to sit back and kind of watch Hurricane go to war. [02:29.56]It was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do." [02:33.47]Hurricane's mouth finally got a firm hold on the intruder's arm [02:38.92]and the dog forced the man to the ground. [02:42.84]Officers moved in and arrested the suspect. [02:46.72]Mirarchi said Hurricane was badly hurt. [02:51.96]"To see him afterwards after that happened, bring him back to the car, [02:57.84]and have him look at me, like, you can read his mind. It's like ‘Dad, did I do a good job?' [03:02.44]He doesn't know he's protecting the White House. [03:04.20]He doesn't know the president and his family are inside. He's doing that for me." [03:08.28]On his flight to London, British Airways gave Hurricane the "royal" treatment. [03:15.43]That included a limousine ride to the airport [03:19.58]and a seat on which he could stretch out during the flight. [03:23.98]Mirarchi was seated beside him. [03:28.56]The 10-year-old dog left active duty in 2016 [03:33.26]because of health problems linked to the attack. [03:37.84]He now lives in retirement with Mirarchi. [03:42.40]I'm Bryan Lynn. 更多听力请访问51VOA.COM
