Yang writes, [00:08.04]I'm confused with the be verb and the do verb. [00:12.56]Which one should I use, especially when making a question? – Yang, China [00:18.92]Dear Yang, [00:20.40]Do you want to learn how to ask questions with ? [00:25.04]Are you learning about the be verb, too? [00:28.20]I just used those verbs to ask you questions! [00:34.12]Be and do are called auxiliary or "helping" verbs. [00:40.88]That means they help make questions or negative statements with main verbs. [00:47.44]To answer your question, let us start with the auxiliary verb do. [00:53.48]Use do when you make a question in the simple present tense. [00:59.20]In the following questions, the main verb does not change. [01:04.76]What do you want to eat? ("want" is the main verb) [01:09.44]Does she like her job? [01:12.24]You also can use do to ask a question in the simple past tense. [01:17.96]Use the past tense, "did" with the main verb, as in these questions. [01:25.04]Did you eat pizza yesterday? ("eat" is the main verb) [01:29.44]Which car did you buy? [01:31.52]Use the helping verb do when using "not" in a question [01:36.88]or statement in the simple present or past. [01:41.92]Here are two examples: [01:44.32]Why don't you ask her? [01:47.08]Didn't he go to the party? [01:49.76]Use be when you want to make a question in the present continuous or past continuous tense. [01:58.68]The continuous form of English verbs adds the letters ‘i-n-g' [02:04.80]to the end of the main verb and be matches the subject. [02:10.72]These questions can be negative, too. [02:15.56]Are you thinking about the Christmas party? [02:18.44]Were they making dinner when you arrived? [02:22.72]Isn't she driving home now? [02:25.56]There is one more auxiliary verb in English, the word have. [02:30.68]We will talk about how to use have another time. [02:35.40]And that is Ask a Teacher.
