[00:09.80]The finding comes from recent research published by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). [00:18.24]About 1,300 reporters, or journalists, in 77 countries answered questions from the IFJ. [00:29.08]Three out of four of them said they faced restrictions, [00:33.24]threats or other difficulties while reporting on the COVID-19 crisis. [00:41.04]Two-thirds of those questioned said they have experienced worsening working conditions, [00:47.36]including decreased pay and job losses. [00:52.88]Anthony Bellanger is the IFJ general secretary. [00:58.20]He said, "These results show a worrying trend of declining media freedom and cuts to journalism [01:06.04]at the very time when access to information and quality journalism is so crucial." [01:14.28]He added, "Journalism is a public good and it deserves public support." [01:22.68]Almost every independent journalist reported wage or job losses in the April survey. [01:31.20]More than half said they have also suffered mental health problems like stress and anxiety. [01:40.60]The IFJ said more than 25 percent of those questioned [01:45.64]said they lack the right equipment to work at home as ordered by their governments. [01:53.68]Another 25 percent said they lacked personal protective equipment for working in the field. [02:02.08]The IFJ report also said,、 [02:04.68]"When asked about the state of media freedom in their countries the vast majority said it had got worse." [02:13.56]The group noted that many reporters have been arrested or faced legal action since the virus began to spread. [02:24.68]Almost one in four journalists said they have struggled to get information from their government or official sources. [02:34.76]Many criticized restrictions on free movement or on asking questions during press conferences. [02:44.84]The IFJ said, "From Greece to Indonesia and from Chad to Peru, journalists used words [02:53.80]such as precarious, problematic, terrible, worse, declining and restricted" [03:02.20]to describe the current media freedom environment.
