[00:18.44]Every year, the United States celebrates Father's Day on the third Sunday in June. [00:25.16]Other countries such as Britain, Canada, India, Ireland, Mexico [00:32.08]also celebrate fathers on this Sunday in June. [00:36.96]But some countries choose to celebrate fathers at other times of the year. [00:42.80]In Australia, Father's Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in September. [00:49.16]In Norway, Sweden, and Finland, the holiday falls on the second Sunday in November. [00:57.92]In countries with strong a Roman Catholic tradition [01:01.76]-- for example, Italy, Spain, and Portugal -- Father's Day falls on March 19. [01:08.44]That is the main feast day of a religious holiday honoring Saint Joseph. [01:14.56]He was the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. [01:19.52]And China celebrates Father's Day on August 8 [01:24.24]– the eighth day in the eighth month of the year. [01:28.92]Why on that day, you may ask? [01:32.12]The word in Chinese for "eight" is ba [01:36.04]and two of them -- ba ba -- is a term for "father" in Chinese. [01:42.96]Regardless of when or even if your country holds Father's Day, [01:48.24]today we will celebrate fathers around the world with a father-related expression: [01:55.04]Success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan. [02:01.44]The phrase has this meaning: [02:04.96]People are often quick to connect themselves to successful events [02:10.52]and distance themselves from failed ones. [02:14.00]So you can use this expression when talking about people [02:19.12]wanting to be close to success or far away from failure. [02:25.16]Here is an example. [02:27.64]Let us say you are working hard on a risky business project. [02:33.20]There is a good chance that it could fail. [02:36.88]For that reason, other people do not want to help you. [02:41.20]They keep their distance. [02:43.76]So, you are forced to work by yourself. [02:47.68]Finally, you complete the project, and over time, it becomes a huge success. [02:54.52]So, you decide to throw a celebration party. [02:59.28]Now, some of the people who thought it would fail come to your party. [03:04.08]They want to be close to you and your successful project. [03:09.48]They may say things like, "I knew you could do it." [03:13.60]or "I had a feeling this was a great idea!" [03:17.16]You can say to them, "Yes, success has many fathers..." [03:22.76]You don't even need to say the whole phrase. [03:26.36]They should understand the insult. [03:30.08]Several websites claim that the man who first used this phrase [03:35.24]was an Italian diplomat named Count Caleazzo Ciano. [03:40.68]He was married to a daughter of Benito Mussolini, Italy's leader during World War II. [03:48.48]In 1961, U.S. President John F. Kennedy popularized this saying. [03:56.00]Kennedy used the expression in a speech when he announced [04:00.92]the failure of the U.S.-supported Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba. [04:07.96]Perhaps some people wanted to distance themselves from the failed invasion. [04:13.40]But Kennedy, as Commander in Chief, could not. [04:18.20]He changed a few words, but the meaning is still the same. [04:22.80]Here is part of his 1961 address to the American people. [04:28.76]"There's an old saying that victory has 100 fathers and defeat is an orphan. [04:34.76]I've said as much as I feel can be usefully said by me [04:40.04]in regard to the events of the past few days. [04:43.24]Further statements, detailed discussions, are not to conceal responsibility, [04:52.76]because I'm the responsible officer of the government, [04:55.00]but merely because I, and that is quite obvious, [04:57.88]but merely because I do not believe that such a discussion [05:02.28]would benefit us during the present difficult situation." [05:09.88]That was former president John F. Kennedy expanding on the phrase, [05:15.24]Success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan. [05:21.00]And that is Words and Their Stories for Father's Day. [05:24.48]Until next time. [05:25.68]I'm Anna Matteo. [05:29.00]If I could get another chance [05:34.52]Another walk [05:37.60]Another dance with him [05:41.56]I'd play a song that would never ever end [05:45.96]How I'd love love love [05:49.64]To dance with my father again 更多听力请访问51VOA.COM
