[00:10.72]When the coronavirus health crisis forced the school to close, [00:15.72]he knew he could not move his classes online. [00:20.84]His students live in rural areas that lack internet connections. [00:28.08]Some do not even have a telephone signal. [00:33.48]Instead, Suroto found another way [00:37.68]to make sure his students keep studying: He goes to them. [00:44.60]The 57-year-old teacher spends about six hours a day [00:51.04]traveling by motorbike and on foot [00:55.08]to reach communities in the Magelang area of Central Java. [01:02.20]Suroto sees educating the children as a responsibility. [01:08.76]"I am a teacher; it is my responsibility to do this. [01:13.68]I must accompany and teach my students," he told Reuters news agency. [01:21.04]His only concern seems to be the rain. [01:25.28]He says it gets especially difficult going up and down valleys on rainy days. [01:33.52]In the area where he works, many of the households are not set up to use technology. [01:43.32]That is the case in large parts of the country, [01:47.36]which is home to more than 260 million people. [01:53.92]Indonesia has more than 17 thousand islands. [01:59.88]About 6,000 of them are inhabited, and many parts are rural. [02:06.76]Millions of students, including those on the islands of Komodo and Madura, [02:13.84]are struggling with home schooling because their households lack basic technology. [02:23.20]Some students are forced to go several meters [02:27.32]outside their homes to connect to the internet. [02:32.68]The country has around 60 million households, [02:37.28]but only about one in six had an internet connection as recently as one year ago. [02:47.08]That information comes from the Association of Internet Service Providers Indonesia. [02:57.96]"Well, I do not know what the internet is and other sophisticated devices [03:04.64]that are often used nowadays," said Martinus Kartijo. [03:11.32]He is father to a student in Henrikus Suroto's class. [03:18.44]Arnasih, a mother of another student, [03:22.16]is thankful for the influence the teacher has on her children. [03:29.32]"The children listen and obey orders from their teachers, [03:33.92]compared to their parents," she said. [03:38.20]For their part, students say they welcome the face-to-face meetings with Suroto, [03:45.40]who wears a facial covering [03:47.92]and obeys social distancing rules during his visits with students. [03:54.88]"Studying at home sometimes can be difficult, sometimes easy, [04:00.88]but if Mr. Suroto is there, all subjects become easy," [04:07.84]said Albertus Jonas Wiratama, a third-grade student.
