[00:13.48]The findings suggest that asymptomatic cases [00:18.28]are important in the spread of the virus. [00:22.08]The study was led by scientists at Italy's Padua University [00:28.48]and Imperial College London. [00:31.40]The scientists looked at the Italian town of Vò. [00:37.12]The town has about 3,200 people. [00:41.96]It was put under quarantine for 14 days [00:45.92]after having Italy's first COVID-19 death on February 21. [00:52.60]An early, unedited version of the study [00:57.00]was published in the scientific journal Nature on Monday. [01:01.96]The scientists said they tested 85.9 percent [01:07.76]and 71.5 percent of the population of Vo' at two different times. [01:16.12]In the first part of the study, [01:18.80]which was done around the time the town's quarantine started, [01:23.76]researchers found 73 people were infected. [01:28.56]That is about 2.6 percent of the population. [01:34.00]In the second part of the study, which was done after the end of the quarantine, [01:40.56]they found 29 people were infected. [01:44.40]That is about 1.2 percent of the population. [01:49.56]In both parts of the study, about 40 percent of those who were infected [01:55.96]did not have symptoms at the time of testing. [01:59.84]They also did not develop symptoms afterwards. [02:04.64]In other words, they were asymptomatic. [02:08.48]The study produced evidence that testing along with case isolation [02:15.12]and community quarantines can stop local outbreaks quickly. [02:20.60]Because all of the coronavirus cases found were quarantined, [02:25.68]the researchers said, the disease was not able to spread quickly. [02:31.96]Andrea Crisanti is a professor at Padua. [02:36.20]Crisanti was one of the leaders of the project. [02:40.36]"Despite ‘silent' and widespread transmission, [02:44.60]the disease can be controlled," Crisanti said. [02:48.96]"Testing of all citizens, whether or not they have symptoms, [02:54.08]provides a way to...prevent outbreaks getting out of hand." [02:59.28]Crisanti has become well known in Italy [03:02.68]for his support of widespread testing. [03:05.88]Crisanti said the success of Vo's testing [03:10.00]also guided wider public health policy in the Veneto Region, [03:15.56]where it had "a tremendous impact [03:18.16]on the course of the epidemic" there compared to other regions.
