[00:13.12]The temperature was recorded at 3:41 p.m. local time at Furnace Creek in Death Valley. [00:22.96]In a statement, the NWS said, [00:26.20]"If verified, this will be the hottest temperature officially verified [00:31.64]since July of 1913, also at Death Valley. [00:37.60]As this is an extreme temperature event, [00:40.52]the recorded temperature will need to undergo a formal review." [00:46.64]The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) [00:49.72]says the record for the highest temperature [00:53.00]was 56.7 Celsius set on July 10, 1913 in Death Valley. [01:01.56]And the highest temperature for the Eastern hemisphere [01:05.08]was set in July 1931 in Kebili, Tunisia, at 55.0°C. [01:12.96]However, the WMO notes that weather historians [01:17.60]have questioned the accuracy of these old temperature records. [01:23.68]The organization said Monday on the social media service Twitter [01:28.48]that it also will work to verify Sunday's measurement. [01:33.92]The U.S. National Park Service says Death Valley [01:37.56]is "famous as the hottest place on earth [01:40.80]and driest place in North America." [01:45.28]The desert area also includes Badwater Basin, [01:49.48]the lowest point in North America at 85.9 meters below sea level. [01:57.72]During the summer, the heat is trapped by the high valley walls [02:02.72]and heated even more by the air pressure at its low point. [02:08.60]Visitors are warned to drink at least 4 liters of water each day [02:14.28]and to carry additional water in their cars. [02:19.28]They are also warned to stay close to their vehicles and watch themselves [02:25.00]and others for dizziness, nausea and other signs of heat illness.
