[00:15.56]The U.S. Air Force flight arrived Monday from Christchurch, New Zealand. [00:22.48]The flight carried 106 passengers and crew, said Tony German. [00:30.52]He is a representative for the U.S. Antarctic Program. [00:36.32]The program carries out U.S. scientific research activities. [00:42.96]Antarctica is the driest, coldest and windiest place on Earth. [00:51.12]It is the world's only continent with no recorded cases of the coronavirus. [00:59.80]A worldwide effort aims to make sure incoming scientists [01:05.56]and workers do not bring the virus with them. [01:11.20]German told The Associated Press the new arrivals will start getting ready [01:17.48]for Antarctica's upcoming summer season. [01:22.40]The team will replace much smaller crews [01:26.24]that spent the Southern Hemisphere's winter in Antarctica. [01:32.28]Monday's flight was delayed for three weeks by big storms. [01:39.48]That meant the passengers had an extended, six-week quarantine. [01:46.60]German said the crews were first isolated in San Francisco for four days. [01:54.72]They then spent five weeks isolated in New Zealand, [01:59.60]where they received several coronavirus tests during their stay. [02:07.00]On their arrival at McMurdo Station - the main U.S. base in Antarctica [02:14.48]– all crew members will still be required to wear face coverings for two weeks. [02:22.44]"We are being meticulous to ensure nothing happens," German said. [02:30.12]If the virus does enter the station, German said measures have been established [02:37.24]to test and isolate any infected individuals. [02:43.76]Still, the flight delays over recent weeks showed how difficult it can be [02:51.48]to quickly remove people from Antarctica. [02:56.32]German said it took more than a week for winter crews at McMurdo [03:02.56]to remove snow from the storms and clear the runway. [03:08.44]The Boeing C-17 Globemaster that landed Monday afternoon [03:14.64]was the first U.S. flight to arrive on the continent since early May. [03:22.12]Officials say unusual teamwork involving the U.S., China, Russia [03:29.24]and other countries took place this year in an effort to keep the virus out. [03:36.88]All countries are planning to reduce numbers at their stations for the summer. [03:45.00]The number of people at McMurdo is set to reach 450 this summer. [03:52.32]That is about one-third of the usual level. [03:57.76]Some planned research and building projects will be delayed. [04:03.88]German said the main goals are to keep the stations running [04:08.92]and prepare for next year's winter, [04:12.04]while trying to do some science along the way. [04:17.16]"The show must go on," he said. [04:21.64]I'm Bryan Lynn. 更多听力请访问51VOA.COM
