[00:12.72]The 26-year-old Black woman was shot by officers [00:17.12]inside her home in Louisville last March. [00:22.84]The officer, Brett Hankison, was not charged for his part in Taylor's death, [00:29.80]which happened during a police raid of her apartment on the night of March 13. [00:37.36]Instead, the grand jury charged Hankison [00:40.96]with three counts of wanton endangerment [00:44.24]for firing shots into other nearby apartments during the raid. [00:50.92]Hankison, who is white, has already been dismissed from his job. [00:57.08]No other charges were announced against the other two officers [01:01.16]who took part in the raid, Jonathan Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove. [01:07.80]Immediately after the announcement, people expressed anger [01:12.00]that the grand jury did not do more. [01:15.08]"Justice has NOT been served," tweeted Linda Sarsour of Until Freedom, [01:22.64]a group that has pushed for charges in the case. [01:26.12]"Rise UP. All across this country. Everywhere. Rise up for #BreonnaTaylor." [01:36.04]Protesters in Louisville have pressured state Attorney General Daniel Cameron [01:41.92]to charge the police officers who shot Taylor. [01:45.48]Cameron, a Republican, is Kentucky's first Black state attorney general. [01:52.68]Officers shot Taylor, an emergency medical worker, several times. [01:58.76]Police had entered her home using a warrant during a drug investigation. [02:05.00]The warrant they used did not require the officers to announce their presence. [02:11.12]The use of these so-called no-knock warrants has since been banned in Louisville. [02:19.48]The warrant used to search Taylor's home was connected [02:23.56]to a suspect who did not live there and no drugs were found. [02:29.56]Taylor's boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, [02:32.28]opened fire when police entered, hitting Officer Mattingly. [02:37.24]Walker was charged with attempted murder of a police officer, [02:42.08]but lawyers later dropped the charge. [02:46.12]Walker told police he heard knocking [02:49.00]but did not know who was coming into the home. [02:52.60]He said he fired his gun in self-defense. [02:58.08]Cameron said the state's investigation found that Hankison [03:02.84]and the two other officers announced themselves before entering. [03:08.48]Cameron said the officers acted in self-defense after Walker fired at them. [03:15.48]Cameron has said his office received materials from [03:19.40]the Louisville Police Department's public integrity unit [03:23.40]while trying to decide whether to bring [03:26.24]state charges against the three officers involved. [03:31.12]Hankison was dismissed from the city's police department on June 23. [03:36.44]Acting Louisville Police Chief Robert Schroeder said in a dismissal letter [03:42.16]that Hankison had shown "extreme indifference to the value of human life" [03:48.20]when he "wantonly and blindly" shot 10 rounds of gunfire into Taylor's apartment. [03:56.80]Last week, the city settled a lawsuit against the three officers [04:01.40]brought by Taylor's mother, Tamika Palmer. [04:05.36]The city agreed to pay her $12 million and put in place police reforms. [04:13.68]Protesters in Louisville and across the country [04:16.84]have demanded justice for Taylor and other Black people [04:20.96]killed by police in recent months. [04:23.88]The release in late May of an emergency 911 call [04:29.12]by Taylor's boyfriend marked the beginning of days of protests in Louisville. [04:34.80]The protests were also fueled by the May 25 death of George Floyd, [04:41.00]a Black man who died while being arrested by police in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
