[00:08.16]The Norwegian Nobel Committee is recognizing the group for its efforts [00:13.48]to fight hunger and improve conditions for peace in areas affected by conflict. [00:22.24]The World Food Program has long specialized [00:25.92]in getting assistance to some of the world's most dangerous places. [00:32.60]For example, the WFP has air-dropped food in South Sudan and Syria. [00:41.92]It also created an emergency service [00:45.40]that kept aid flowing as COVID-19 restrictions grounded many flights. [00:53.20]In 2019, the UN agency provided aid to almost 100 million people in 88 countries. [01:03.56]Berit Reiss-Andersen is the chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. [01:09.40]She said on Friday, "With this year's award, the (committee) wishes [01:15.20]to turn the eyes of the world to the millions of people [01:18.60]who suffer from or face the threat of hunger." [01:23.44]In announcing the award, the Nobel committee noted [01:26.92]that "Until the day we have a medical vaccine, [01:30.72]food is the best vaccine against chaos." [01:36.20]And it added, "there will be 265 million starving people within a year, [01:43.12]so of course this is also a call to the international community [01:47.84]not to underfund the World Food Program." [01:53.08]Traveling in Niger, WFP Executive Director David Beasley [01:58.96]credited the men and women of "the WFP family." [02:04.92]He said, "They are out there in the most difficult, complex places in the world, [02:11.44]where there's war, conflict, climate extremes... [02:16.08]They are out there and they deserve this award ..." [02:21.56]Beasley added, "This is the first time I've been speechless ... [02:26.52]This is unbelievable," he said. [02:29.56]"And wow! Wow! Wow! Wow!" [02:34.32]In Geneva, a WFP spokesman told reporters: [02:39.20]"When everything went into shutdown mode, [02:42.12]the World Food Programme was there. [02:44.88]When everyone was leaving... the World Food Programme [02:48.96]had to provide the logistical support that the world deserved, [02:53.20]that the world needed." [02:56.32]Dan Smith is director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. [03:03.36]He said the Nobel committee had wanted to send a message [03:07.60]of both hope and "support for international cooperation." [03:13.88]"Hunger, like climate change, the pandemic and other issues, [03:19.12]is a world problem that can only be properly addressed [03:23.16]through cooperation," he told Reuters news agency. [03:28.68]The award comes with a gold medal and $1.1 million [03:34.12]-- a small amount compared to the money the WFP needs for its work. [03:41.32]So far in 2020, the UN agency has received almost $6.4 billion [03:48.88]in goods and other donations. [03:52.64]More than a third, over $2.7 billion, comes from the United States.
