[00:08.80]On Wednesday, poet Amanda Gorman read her poem, "The Hill We Climb," [00:16.16]at the swearing-in ceremony of President Joe Biden [00:20.80]and Vice President Kamala Harris. [00:25.20]By Thursday, the 22-year-old was a superstar. [00:30.84]Gorman is the youngest poet in U.S. history [00:35.04]to mark the change of presidential power. [00:38.28]Past inaugural poets include famous writers [00:42.40]like Robert Frost and Maya Angelou. [00:46.76]Gorman is a native of Los Angeles, California, [00:50.68]and in 2017 was named the country's first Youth Poet Laureate. [00:57.28]She recently completed her studies at Harvard University. [01:03.48]On Wednesday, Gorman offered a hopeful future for a deeply divided country. [01:09.44]"We will not march back to what was, [01:12.28]but move to what shall be. [01:14.12]A country that is bruised but whole, [01:16.68]benevolent but bold, [01:18.40]fierce and free." [01:21.08]Her reading -- and the ceremony as a whole -- took place exactly two weeks [01:27.56]after a violent mob of supporters of then-President Donald Trump [01:32.60]attacked and occupied the U.S. Capitol Building. [01:37.68]Gorman says she had completed a little more than half [01:41.68]of "The Hill We Climb" before the January 6 attack at the Capitol. [01:49.00]"That day gave me a second wave of energy to finish the poem," [01:53.72]Gorman told The Associated Press. [01:56.76]She chose not to make direct note of the attack, [02:01.20]but her references to the event were clear: [02:04.96]"We've seen a force that would shatter our nation [02:08.32]rather than share it. [02:10.04]Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy. [02:14.72]And this effort very nearly succeeded. [02:17.84]But while democracy can be periodically delayed, [02:22.32]it can never be permanently defeated." [02:26.44]Hours after the inauguration, her two books [02:30.88]-- which are to be released later this year [02:33.76]-- became number 1 and 2 on Amazon.com's sales list. [02:39.64]Gorman's poetry collection "The Hill We Climb" [02:43.84]and her children's book "Change Sings" [02:47.40]are set to be published in September.
