[00:09.48]He weighs 85 kilograms. [00:12.72]That means he is two times the size of the other children his age. [00:19.40]His big size makes him very good at his sport. [00:24.28]When he wrestles boys five or six years older, he wins. [00:30.04]He is so good that last year Kyuta was named the under-10 world champion. [00:39.16]He defeated competitors from as far away as Britain and Ukraine. [00:46.44]Kyuta is a shy boy of few words. [00:50.80]When reporters for the Associated Press [00:54.24]asked him why he likes to wrestle, [00:57.20]his answer was simple: "It is fun to beat people older than me." [01:04.56]His father Taisuke created his training routine. [01:10.00]And the training is not easy. [01:13.04]The 10-year-old boy trains six days each week [01:17.20]and does many different exercises. [01:20.64]He lifts weights, moves huge tires, swims, and runs. [01:28.56]The goal is to build up flexibility and quickness, [01:32.76]two things needed for sumo wrestling. [01:36.92]Kyuta has been on this routine since about age six. [01:41.84]That is when his father first entered him in a sumo competition. [01:47.80]"I didn't teach him anything," Taisuke said, [01:51.56]adding that his son could wrestle naturally. [01:56.04]Taisuke himself used to be a sumo wrestler. [02:00.64]"There is a talent for sumo, he said, "and he has that talent." [02:07.16]After winning that first competition, [02:10.12]Taisuke thought his son may have a special talent for sumo. [02:16.72]The training costs a lot of money [02:19.72]and requires sacrifices from the entire family, [02:24.20]including his mother Makiko. [02:28.44]His father says he does not gamble. [02:31.64]Instead, he is betting everything on his son. [02:36.68]When it became clear the boy had talent, [02:40.04]Taisuke moved the family to the Fukagawa area of Tokyo. [02:46.40]This area is famous for sumo wrestlers. [02:50.92]It has many sumo clubs. [02:53.96]It also has the Nominosukune Shrine. [02:59.44]This is where the God of Sumo is said to live. [03:04.08]So, there is a lot of local support for sumo culture. [03:09.48]Father and son use a local temple for intense one-on-one training. [03:16.32]The training usually ends with the two wrestling [03:19.84]up and down the carpet in front of the main temple. [03:24.88]Taisuke pushes Kyuta so hard [03:28.32]that the child is often left breathless and crying. [03:34.00]But the father believes it is the only way to get the best out of his son. [03:40.40]"I think he is managing to make time for himself [03:43.88]and I think he has time to play with his friends," explained Taisuke, [03:49.40]adding, "I don't think it is too much pressure." [03:54.12]Besides training, another important part of sumo success is food. [04:01.88]On an average day, Kyuta will eat up to 4,000 calories. [04:07.72]This includes over a liter of milk and a lot of protein. [04:13.52]Steak is his favorite. [04:16.96]While Kyuta ate a large meal, his father told reporters [04:21.64]that his son needs to put on another 20 kilograms [04:26.32]by the time he enters middle school in two years. [04:31.24]If he does that, the hope is he will be taken in [04:35.40]by a famous sumo coaching team. [04:38.84]Taisuke said there has already been interest. [04:43.56]Kyuta himself said he wants to reach the level of "yokozuna." [04:49.32]That is the highest ranking in the sport. [04:52.80]But he admits the workout routine and lifestyle [04:57.48]can be extreme and hard. [05:01.60]"Sumo training is something you don't describe [05:04.84]with words like ‘enjoy'," Kyuta said. [05:09.12]"When it became tough... [05:10.84]I have thought about (quitting) sometimes." [05:15.08]For now, the struggle toward the top continues, [05:18.28]for both father and son.
