[00:15.72]The famous painting shows a figure holding its head [00:20.40]in its hands with its mouth wide open. [00:24.12]The art work has become an internationally recognized symbol [00:30.20]for the expression of human fear and concern. [00:34.56]The sentence written on the painting says, [00:38.12]“can only have been painted by a madman.” [00:42.12]It was written with a pencil in the top left-hand area of the painting. [00:48.60]The painting is being prepared to be shown [00:52.24]at the new National Museum of Norway, [00:55.80]which will open in Oslo, the Norwegian capital, in 2022. [01:02.72]The painting has been the subject of a lot of careful research. [01:08.80]In a recent statement, Mai Britt Guleng, [01:12.72]head of the National Museum, said, [01:16.44]“The writing is without a doubt Munch’s own.” [01:21.28]Guleng added the writing was compared [01:24.88]to the painter’s writing in letters. [01:28.44]“The handwriting itself, as well as events [01:32.52]that happened in 1895, when Munch showed the painting in Norway [01:38.52]for the first time, all point in the same direction,” Guleng explained. [01:45.40]The writing was added after Munch had completed the painting. [01:50.32]But for years it has been a mystery, the museum said in a statement. [01:57.04]Guleng said the writing was likely done “in 1895, [02:03.00]when Munch exhibited the painting for the first time.” [02:07.88]Exhibit means to make something, [02:11.32]such as a painting or photograph, available for people to see. [02:17.12]At the time of its first showing, the painting caused many people [02:22.60]to wonder about Munch’s mental state. [02:26.16]During a discussion night when the artist was present, [02:30.92]a young medical student questioned Munch’s mental health [02:35.40]and claimed his work proved he was not sound. [02:40.12]“It is likely that Munch added the inscription in 1895, or shortly after, [02:47.68]in response to the judgment on his work,” the statement read. [02:52.72]Munch was hurt by the accusations. [02:56.00]He wrote about them many times in his letters. [03:00.04]Both Munch's father and sister suffered from mental issues. [03:05.60]Munch was put into a hospital after a nervous breakdown in 1908. [03:12.44]A nervous breakdown is an inability to live normally in daily life [03:18.88]because of extremely strong feelings of worry or tension. [03:24.68]The National Gallery was temporarily closed in 2019 [03:30.08]to secure a safe moving process to the new National Museum. [03:35.92]The museum will show 400,000 objects, [03:40.60]from ancient times to the present day. [03:43.56]It will have paintings, statues, drawings [03:47.96]and many other art objects.
