[00:11.24]The social media company also announced changes [00:16.28]to a policy that permitted politicians [00:20.16]to post some kinds of content that violates its rules. [00:27.04]The changes were announced in a statement by Nick Clegg, [00:32.40]Facebook's vice president of global affairs and communications. [00:38.84]The company suspended Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts in January. [00:45.48]Facebook said it took the action because Trump posted content [00:51.36]that risked fueling further violence [00:54.44]after the January 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol by his supporters. [01:02.72]Clegg said the decision to extend the suspension [01:07.08]until at least January 2023 [01:11.04]was made because Facebook believes Trump's actions [01:15.20]represented "a severe violation" of its rules. [01:20.16]And, his actions had earned "the highest penalty available [01:25.64]under new enforcement" measures. [01:29.00]The latest decision came after a Facebook advisory board last month [01:35.96]criticized the company for making Trump's suspension "indefinite." [01:42.04]The board said the open-ended ban was wrong [01:47.16]because it was ordered without clear standards. [01:51.84]When the two years are up, Facebook "will look to experts to assess [01:58.00]whether the risk to public safety has receded." [02:02.00]If the company decides there is still a serious risk to public safety, [02:08.68]"we will extend the restriction for a set period of time," Clegg said. [02:15.80]In a press release, Trump called Facebook's decision "an insult" [02:21.88]to Americans who voted for him in the 2020 presidential election. [02:28.92]He said the social media service "shouldn't be allowed [02:33.32]to get away with this censoring and silencing ... [02:37.36]our country can't take this abuse anymore!" Trump said in the release. [02:44.76]Facebook also announced it will strengthen penalties [02:49.12]for "public figures" during times of civil unrest and violence. [02:56.00]It said those who violate its policies during such times [03:01.16]can be restricted from posting [03:04.04]for periods between one month and two years. [03:09.00]Public figures who continue to violate policies [03:13.32]after being placed under restrictions [03:16.20]will be subject to "heightened penalties," [03:19.72]including possible permanent removal, the company said. [03:26.08]Facebook also said it would [03:28.68]end its "newsworthiness exemption" policy for politicians. [03:34.56]The policy permitted content posted by politicians [03:39.52]to avoid going through the company's usual [03:43.24]third-party fact-checking program. [03:46.64]The program is designed to prevent false information, [03:51.96]hate speech and other abusive material from appearing on Facebook. [03:58.44]But Facebook said it put the exemption in place [04:03.00]because it saw the speech of political leaders as "newsworthy" [04:08.64]and in the public interest, [04:11.24]even if the content was offensive or highly disputed. [04:17.20]The exemption policy had been criticized [04:20.76]for giving special treatment to politicians. [04:24.48]Facebook said it had never used the exemption policy [04:29.80]in relation to content posted by Trump. [04:34.28]Facebook said Friday that it will still use the exemption to some posts [04:40.60]it considers to be in the public interest [04:44.36]even if they violate Facebook rules. [04:48.88]However, it will no longer treat material posted by politicians [04:54.48]differently from content posted by any other user. [05:00.40]In addition, Facebook said it will now make public cases [05:05.60]where it does use the exemption. [05:08.84]And, the company said it would start publishing details [05:13.48]about its system of "strikes" [05:16.36]that is issued to accounts for breaking content rules. [05:21.12]I'm Bryan Lynn.
