[00:14.32]Police Chief Léon Charles told reporters [00:19.36]that two other suspects were arrested [00:22.60]during the shootout late Wednesday. [00:25.44]He described them as "mercenaries." [00:29.04]Three police officers who were being held [00:32.48]by the suspects were also freed. [00:36.00]The search for the killers began shortly after Moise was killed [00:42.00]during an early Wednesday morning attack [00:45.56]at his home in the capital city of Port-au-Prince. [00:50.20]Video obtained by the national police [00:53.92]appears to show the assassins posed as agents [00:58.20]of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency. [01:01.48]Bocchit Edmond is Haiti's ambassador to the United States. [01:07.64]He told VOA that he was not certain of the gunmen's nationality. [01:13.64]But interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph [01:17.72]said the gunmen spoke English and Spanish. [01:21.24]Most people in Haiti speak French or Haitian Creole. [01:26.88]Joseph also declared a state of emergency [01:31.52]and said he was the country's new leader. [01:34.56]His hold on power, however, is uncertain. [01:39.12]Earlier in the week, President Moise nominated Ariel Henry [01:45.40]to replace Joseph as the country's new prime minister. [01:50.12]But Henry has yet to be sworn in. [01:53.60]The New York Times reported Henry told a Haitian newspaper [01:58.36]that Joseph is "no longer Prime Minister." [02:01.96]He also claimed the office for himself. [02:05.68]Joseph is Haiti's sixth prime minister in the past four years. [02:11.36]The country has no working parliament. [02:14.72]And the head of the country's highest court [02:18.24]died last month of COVID-19. [02:22.12]First lady Martine Moise was also shot during the attack. [02:27.56]She is in stable, but critical condition, the ambassador said. [02:33.04]She has been moved to a hospital in Miami, Florida, for treatment. [02:38.68]One of the president's children who was home during the attack [02:43.20]has been taken to a secure place. [02:46.92]U.S. President Joe Biden, in a statement, [02:50.76]condemned Moise's assassination [02:53.64]and wished for the first lady's recovery. [02:57.20]He added the U.S. stands "ready to assist [03:01.08]as we continue to work for a safe and secure Haiti." [03:05.64]In Washington, members of the Organization of American States [03:11.56]held an emergency meeting Wednesday and condemned the killing. [03:17.32]In New York, the United Nations Security Council president, [03:22.04]French Ambassador Nicolas de Riviere, [03:26.00]said the council was deeply shocked by the assassination. [03:30.64]The council will meet privately Thursday morning to discuss events. [03:35.96]The U.N. has about 1,200 staff in Haiti [03:41.08]as part of its political mission there. [03:44.04]Amnesty International is calling for an investigation [03:48.76]into Moise's assassination, calling it a sign of the "serious [03:54.28]human rights and political crisis that Haiti has been facing for years." [04:00.20]Haiti has been experiencing political instability and division, [04:05.80]as well as a rise in gang violence. [04:09.12]Last week in Port-au-Prince, gang leader Jimmy Cherisier [04:14.72]took to the streets to protest Moise's government, [04:18.68]calling for his resignation. [04:21.20]"Jovenel (Moise) must go!" Cherisier told reporters during the protest. [04:28.16]"A new group of people needs to lead this country, [04:32.32]and we must sit together around a table, [04:35.44]have a national dialogue so we can redefine this country."
