[00:05.52]Daniil Medvedev of Russia won the men’s competition, [00:10.68]defeating Novak Djokovic of Serbia. [00:14.56]A day earlier, Briton Emma Raducanu captured the championship [00:20.40]in play against Leylah Fernandez of Canada in two sets. [00:27.92]The men’s final placed the two top tennis players against each other: [00:34.28]Djokovic is number one in the world; Medvedev is number two. [00:40.28]Djokovic was seeking a record at the event. [00:45.32]He hoped to win the first Grand Slam [00:49.92]since Australian Rod Laver did it in 1969. [00:56.32]In tennis, the Grand Slam means [00:59.64]winning all four major tournaments in the same year. [01:03.76]Djokovic won the first three: [01:06.92]the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon. [01:11.88]But, it was not to be. [01:14.68]The 25-year-old Medvedev won in three sets, [01:19.28]each six to four. [01:22.64]The Associated Press described his performance as [01:26.52]“seemingly effortless” with “pinpoint serving.” [01:31.92]It was the first major championship for Medvedev. [01:36.28]After his win, he praised the 34-year-old Djokovic. [01:41.48]“I’ve never said this to anybody, but I’ll say it right now: [01:45.56]For me, you are the greatest tennis player in history.” [01:51.12]Medvedev said defeating such a player [01:54.56]made him feel more sure about his future in the sport. [01:59.56]Djokovic was brought to tears by the end of the match. [02:03.44]He also praised Medvedev. [02:06.00]“Just congratulate him, full credit [02:09.80]from his mentality, his approach, his game, everything.” [02:15.20]As to his own play, Djokovic said [02:18.44]he knows he could have and should have played better. [02:22.40]“Just energy-wise, I felt slow,” he added. [02:28.52]He also thanked the tennis fans [02:30.48]who came to Arthur Ashe Stadium to see the match. [02:34.84]Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, [02:38.28]fans were not permitted in 2020. [02:42.84]Djokovic, 34, remains tied with Roger Federer and [02:47.56]Rafael Nadal with 20 major championships. [02:53.08]The women’s final Saturday [02:55.52]brought together two little-known teenagers. [02:59.92]The victor, Emma Raducanu, [03:02.60]had played in her first professional tournament [03:06.12]only three months earlier. [03:08.72]Raducanu’s win was called “improbable.” [03:14.48]She is the first U.S. Open women’s champion [03:19.44]to come out of the group of qualifiers. [03:23.84]Qualifiers are players [03:25.56]who are not guaranteed a chance to be in the tournament. [03:30.28]She had to play three matches [03:33.04]just to get into the main part of the two-week event. [03:38.72]Next, Raducanu had to win six more times to reach the final. [03:47.32]She won every set she played, [03:49.92]becoming the first to do so since Serena Williams in 2014. [03:58.12]Raducanu was born in Canada [04:01.08]and moved to Britain as a small child. [04:04.40]She is the first British woman [04:07.04]to win a major singles tournament since 1977. [04:14.32]At 18, Raducanu is also the youngest [04:18.48]Grand Slam tournament winner since 2004. [04:24.40]Fernandez is 19. [04:26.84]She entered the match as the 73rd-ranked player in the world. [04:33.32]She was an unlikely opponent in a tournament [04:36.40]that included top-ranked players including Naomi Osaka and Ash Barty. [04:42.84]Before this year’s U.S. Open, [04:45.76]Fernandez had never made it past the third round of a major tournament. [04:53.08]The last time the two women had played [04:55.88]was during the Wimbledon junior tournament in 2018. [05:02.88]Raducanu’s win came with some worry, and some blood. [05:07.48]She went to the ground trying to return a shot from Fernandez [05:13.32]late in the second set and hurt her leg. [05:18.00]The umpire stopped the match so she could get medical treatment. [05:24.16]When she returned, she won the next game, and the match. [05:29.40]“I can’t believe it,” Raducanu said. [05:32.44]With the win, she earned $2.5 million [05:38.28]and a congratulatory message from Queen Elizabeth, [05:43.52]who called the victory “a remarkable achievement [05:48.00]at such a young age.” [05:51.92]The next major tournament is the 2022 Australian Open, [05:57.96]which opens on January 17.
