[00:11.08]Measurements by the EU's Copernicus satellite system [00:16.08]showed the average surface temperatures from June to August [00:22.12]were about 1 degree Celsius higher than the 1991-2020 average. [00:31.72]Temperatures across Europe were also 0.1 degree Celsius warmer [00:39.28]than the past warmest summers on record, in 2010 and 2018. [00:48.00]The 2021 summer temperature record [00:51.68]marks the latest development in a long-term [00:55.68]worldwide warming trend. [00:58.24]Scientists have linked climate change on the planet [01:03.52]to pollution emissions related to human activities. [01:09.44]The Copernicus observation program [01:12.76]has been keeping temperature records since 1950. [01:18.48]But its records are compared with other data [01:22.64]going back to the mid-19th century. [01:27.28]The organization said that around the world, August 2021 [01:33.84]tied for the third-warmest month on record. [01:38.84]Temperatures in August [01:41.00]were just over 0.3 degrees Celsius warmer [01:46.64]than the 1991 to 2020 average, it reported. [01:53.44]In Europe, the data showed that August 2021 [01:58.28]was near the 1991 to 2020 average. [02:04.16]There were record-breaking high temperatures [02:07.16]in Mediterranean countries, [02:09.52]warmer-than-average weather in the east [02:13.20]and generally below-average temperatures in the north. [02:18.88]Earlier on Tuesday, a group of environmental groups [02:23.76]called for a postponement [02:25.92]of a major United Nations Climate Change Conference [02:30.64]because of the continuing COVID-19 crisis. [02:36.68]The COP26 conference, which was already delayed for a year, [02:43.52]is set to open in early November in Glasgow, Scotland. [02:49.96]But the Climate Action Network, CAN, [02:54.04]said it is concerned that many delegates from around the world [02:59.40]may not be able to attend because of travel restrictions. [03:05.24]In addition, many countries are struggling [03:08.88]to control COVID-19 case numbers. [03:13.72]Some countries are having difficulties [03:16.76]getting vaccines, the group said. [03:20.76]"Our concern is that those countries [03:24.12]most deeply affected by the climate crisis [03:27.96]and those countries suffering from the lack of support [03:32.24]by rich nations in providing vaccines [03:36.24]will be left out of the talks..." the CAN's director, [03:40.84]Tasneem Essop said in a statement. [03:45.60]The British government, which is holding the event, [03:49.16]rejected calls for a postponement. [03:52.60]It said the latest Copernicus report results [03:57.16]demonstrate the urgency for leaders [04:00.76]to deal with climate change issues. [04:04.84]COP26 President-Designate Alok Sharma [04:10.16]noted that while the conference had been delayed a year [04:14.92]because of the pandemic, [04:16.76]"climate change has not taken time off.'' [04:21.44]Sharma added that conference organizers [04:25.24]were working "tirelessly" with its partners and the Scottish government [04:31.12]"to ensure an inclusive, accessible and safe" meeting in Glasgow."
