[00:15.92]Two chip factories will be built [00:19.32]on a 400-hectare site northeast of the city of Columbus, [00:26.08]the company announced on January 21. [00:31.56]Building is expected to begin in late 2022 [00:36.84]and production is set to start in 2025. [00:44.44]The two factories are expected to create 3,000 company positions [00:50.84]and 7,000 building jobs, Intel and local officials said. [00:59.40]The center is also expected to support [01:03.48]tens of thousands of additional jobs for suppliers and partners. [01:11.40]Intel Chief Executive Officer Pat Gelsinger [01:16.12]told Reuters the $20-billion investment [01:20.72]could grow to $100 billion [01:24.64]and an additional six factories in the future. [01:31.08]Intel's announcement comes after years of heavy dependence on Asia [01:37.48]for the worldwide production of computer chips. [01:42.64]The Semiconductor Industry Association says [01:47.16]the U.S. share of the worldwide chip manufacturing market [01:52.64]has decreased from 37 percent in 1990 to just 12 percent today. [02:02.40]Chip shortages have hurt the ability [02:05.84]of American automakers to produce vehicles. [02:10.48]The shortages have affected other industries as well. [02:17.76]The United States and Europe are pushing [02:21.36]to aggressively increase their ability to produce chips. [02:26.40]Several chipmakers last year expressed an interest [02:31.96]in expanding their American operations [02:35.72]if the U.S. government is able to make it easier to build chip plants. [02:42.92]Chipmakers have reacted by expanding their manufacturing sites [02:49.08]to help reduce shortages. [02:52.56]Samsung announced in November it plans [02:56.44]to build a $17-billion factory near Austin, Texas. [03:03.36]Micron Technology, based in Boise, Idaho, [03:07.84]said it will invest $150 billion worldwide [03:13.40]over the next 10 years to develop its line of memory chips. [03:20.96]It said it could expand manufacturing in the U.S. [03:26.20]if it receives tax credits to help make up [03:30.40]for higher operating costs in America. [03:36.36]U.S. lawmakers have been urging House and Senate leaders [03:41.44]to fully finance a law meant to deal [03:45.48]with the semiconductor chip shortage. [03:50.12]The $52-billion CHIPS for America Act [03:56.00]permits a series of federal investments [03:59.92]to support U.S. chip manufacturers. [04:05.64]Separate federal legislation currently being considered [04:10.80]would also create a new tax credit for investment [04:15.36]in chip manufacturing centers.
