[00:10.24]He used kites to move the boat [00:12.88]and solar power to use lights and equipment on the boat. [00:17.76]Francisco Lufinha arrived on the island of Martinique on December 20. [00:24.24]He hopes his trip will earn him a Guinness World record [00:27.64]for Fastest Solo Atlantic Crossing by Kite Boat. [00:32.84]He also hopes his trip will help people [00:35.40]understand the need to protect the oceans. [00:39.96]The kite-powered boat [00:41.36]reached top speeds of over 30 kilometers per hour. [00:46.48]Lufinha traveled 6,400 kilometers in 25 days. [00:53.36]The 38-year-old set out from Cascais, [00:56.40]near Lisbon, Portugal on November 3 [01:00.00]and arrived on the Caribbean island of Martinique on December 20. [01:05.96]Lufinha was not at sea for all that time, however. [01:10.92]He made a planned stop at the Canary Islands on November 8. [01:16.48]He had to stay longer than planned because of strong winds. [01:21.32]He remained there until November 30. [01:24.80]Lufinha made the crossing completely alone [01:28.16]in a 7.2-meter-long and 5.6-meter-wide trimaran. [01:34.60]This kind of boat has three long, thin parts, [01:38.08]with a small room for sleeping and shelter. [01:42.04]Lufinha used a hand pump [01:44.28]to produce water for drinking and cooking. [01:48.68]He said, "To produce water, I need to use this water maker. [01:53.60]I have two of these, which I can pump [01:56.32]and every hour I can make around four liters of water." [02:01.08]The water pump has a special filter [02:03.56]to remove salt from the sea water. [02:07.08]Lufinha used the water to add [02:09.28]to dried food he carried with him on the boat. [02:13.60]He called his trip "a big learning experience." [02:17.24]"It was a big test of my resilience. I learned a lot. [02:23.72]I learned most of all to look at my problems relatively. [02:29.28]I had so many problems all of the time, [02:32.64]kites getting torn, kites exploding. [02:35.72]And the only way to not suffer was to think, 'it could be worse.'" [02:42.52]Supporters followed Lufinha's trip on his Facebook page. [02:47.48]The main sponsor that supported him during his trip [02:50.72]was the energy company EDP. [02:54.88]He said his way of thinking during the difficult crossing helped him, [02:58.96]"to get through it hour by hour, day by day, week by week [03:04.68]until I got here to the Caribbean [03:07.12]and finished this EDP Atlantic Mission."
