[00:11.04]She says wearing clothes made from waste materials [00:15.68]can be both economical and look good. [00:20.68]Buenviaje is 51-years-old and from Cainta in the Philippines, [00:28.80]about 15 kilometers east of the capital Manilla. [00:34.76]To make her dresses, she uses a foot-operated sewing machine [00:40.56]to join together the waste materials. [00:44.84]These include recycled newspapers, [00:48.24]plastic wrapping and rice sacks. [00:52.40]Recycling is when something new [00:55.40]is made from something that has been used before. [01:00.04]The process Buenviaje uses to join the materials together is called sewing. [01:08.96]Sewing combines two pieces of cloth or is used to repair cloth. [01:16.20]She creates new and beautiful clothes women can wear. [01:22.32]They are sometimes completed with a piece called a headdress [01:27.40]that goes on top of the head. [01:31.08]"The bubble wraps from delivery packages are nice looking [01:35.68]and make for a good design, especially the black and white wraps," she said. [01:44.08]Bubble wrap is a plastic product [01:47.20]that is used to protect goods that are being delivered. [01:53.20]She said white bubble wraps were good for making wedding dresses. [01:59.92]The dresses sell for between $30 to $50. [02:05.72]They are used for everything from coming-of-age parties [02:10.68]for a woman's 18th birthday, called debuts, to weddings. [02:17.68]In Asia, there is plenty of waste material for Buenviaje to work with: [02:26.20]about 80 percent of the world ocean plastic is estimated to come from Asian rivers. [02:35.92]A 2021 report by Oxford University's online publication, Our World in Data, [02:45.40]found that the Philippines is responsible [02:49.40]for one third of Asia's ocean plastic pollution. [02:55.36]"It's important to recycle or utilize used materials [03:00.48]so we can help our earth," said Lalaine Alcalde, [03:06.56]who buys clothes from Buenviaje. [03:11.32]Buenviaje said the recycled materials used for each dress [03:17.52]depend on what her buyers are looking for. [03:22.28]She said her dresses are used in beauty competitions [03:26.88]and are popular with young girls. [03:30.44]"I get delighted whenever they win, [03:33.36]the designs are simple but they still win," she said. [03:38.84]Buenviaje hopes in-person clothing shows [03:43.24]called fashion shows and competitions [03:47.04]that were stopped during the pandemic will begin again soon. [03:53.04]She also aims to organize fashion shows herself [03:57.80]to show and help others find ideas [04:01.48]to create clothing out of recycled materials.
