[00:12.08]Da Silva received 50.9 percent of the vote [00:17.40]while Bolsonaro received 49.1 percent, [00:22.84]according to the country's election officials. [00:27.12]By Monday morning, Bolsonaro had still not admitted to losing. [00:33.08]The delay brings worries that he will dispute the election result. [00:39.64]Before the vote, Bolsonaro had repeatedly said [00:45.20]the election system might be unfair and permit cheating. [00:51.24]He did not give any evidence to support his statements. [00:56.68]International election observers said Sunday's election was fair. [01:02.60]U.S. President Joe Biden congratulated da Silva on his victory. [01:08.28]He said Brazil had "free, fair, and credible elections." [01:15.08]The victory is a huge comeback for the 77-year-old da Silva. [01:21.20]He was Brazil's president for two terms from 2003 to 2010 [01:27.92]and was very popular when he left office. [01:31.96]But after his presidency, he spent 580 days in jail on corruption charges. [01:41.16]His convictions were later canceled by Brazil's top court, [01:46.40]which ruled his trial had been unfair. [01:50.40]Brazil is closely divided politically between conservatives [01:55.76]who support Bolsonaro and liberals who support da Silva. [02:01.36]Thomas Traumann is an independent political expert in Brazil. [02:07.12]He compared Sunday's results to Biden's victory in 2020. [02:13.60]"The huge challenge that Lula has [02:16.80]will be to pacify the country," Traumann said. [02:21.08]"People are not only polarized on political matters, [02:26.32]but also have different values, identity and opinions. " [02:32.32]What's more," he added, "they don't care [02:36.44]what the other side's values, identities and opinions are." [02:41.56]Da Silva has said he wants to work with centrists [02:45.68]and even people who have some conservative views. [02:50.20]In April, he named center-right Geraldo Alckmin, [02:55.76]a former opponent, to be his running mate. [02:59.36]Bolsonaro's conservative administration [03:02.84]has been criticized for bad management [03:06.24]of the COVID-19 pandemic and for permitting [03:11.32]the worst deforestation in the Amazon in 15 years. [03:17.36]Bolsonaro said that da Silva's victory [03:21.00]would bring communism, legalized drugs, [03:25.00]abortion and bad treatment of religious organizations. [03:30.56]These things did not happen [03:33.56]during da Silva's earlier eight years in office. [03:37.96]Da Silva said he will increase spending on the poor [03:42.92]and take strong action to stop illegal clear-cutting [03:48.64]in the Amazon rainforest. [03:51.76]"We will once again monitor and do surveillance in the Amazon. [03:57.88]We will fight every illegal activity," [04:01.44]da Silva said in his speech. [04:04.12]"At the same time, we will promote [04:07.68]sustainable development of communities in the Amazon." [04:12.64]Da Silva's win joins recent liberal victories [04:17.12]across South America, including in Chile, Colombia and Argentina. [04:25.72]I'm Andrew Smith. 更多听力请访问51VOA.COM
