[00:10.44]It was the first time since 2017 [00:13.80]that a North Korean missile flew over Japan. [00:17.84]The Japanese government warned people to move to a place of safety. [00:23.04]Officials in Tokyo and Seoul [00:25.44]said the missile flew between 4,500 to 4,600 kilometers. [00:33.08]It travelled as high as 1,000 kilometers above Earth. [00:38.24]Missiles are flown high [00:39.92]to avoid entering airspace of neighboring countries. [00:44.60]South Korea's military said it appeared to have been [00:48.04]an intermediate-range ballistic missile [00:51.00]launched from North Korea's Jagang Province. [00:55.16]North Korea has launched several recent tests from there. [00:59.04]Japan warned its citizens to go into shelters. [01:04.04]It also stopped some train services [01:06.80]while the missile passed over its north toward the Pacific Ocean. [01:12.52]American President Joe Biden [01:14.56]spoke to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on the phone [01:18.88]after the missile test Tuesday. [01:22.08]Biden assured him that the United States [01:24.64]has an "ironclad commitment" to Japan's defense. [01:29.64]The two leaders jointly condemned the missile test, [01:32.92]the Biden administration said in a statement. [01:37.80]It also said the U.S. would work closely with South Korea [01:41.92]and the international community [01:44.76]to decide how to deal with the issue. [01:48.44]The United States, South Korea and Japan [01:51.80]are currently holding joint military exercises. [01:56.20]American and South Korean warplanes [01:59.28]test-bombed a target in the Yellow Sea [02:01.96]following North Korea's missile flight. [02:05.96]American Vice President Kamala Harris visited the area last week [02:10.68]and spoke at the border between the Koreas. [02:14.56]She said North Korea was weakening the area's security. [02:19.76]North Korea accuses the United States and its allies [02:23.84]of threatening it with exercises and defense buildups. [02:29.28]Japan said it took no steps to shoot the missile down. [02:32.96]But Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada said [02:37.00]it would consider all measures. [02:40.12]South Korea also said it would increase [02:42.56]its military and cooperation with allies. [02:47.00]U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken [02:50.08]and the foreign ministers of Japan [02:53.12]and South Korea "strongly condemned" [02:56.20]North Korea's firing of the missile over Japan. [02:59.52]The three countries also condemned North Korea's violation [03:04.20]of UN Security Council resolutions and the threat to peace. [03:11.00]Blinken said that it is important for the three countries to cooperate [03:15.44]in holding North Korea "accountable for its unacceptable behavior." [03:21.00]Ankit Panda is an expert on nuclear policy [03:24.64]with the U.S.-based Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. [03:30.28]He said that flying a missile such a long distance [03:33.80]permits North Korea's scientists to test it under realistic conditions. [03:39.68]It puts the missile under the stress of re-entering the atmosphere. [03:44.92]South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol called the test "reckless" [03:49.28]and said it would bring a decisive response from his country, [03:53.16]its allies and the international community. [03:58.28]Speaking to reporters in Tokyo, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida [04:03.68]called North Korea's action "barbaric." [04:06.92]Daniel Kritenbrink, the top American diplomat for East Asia, [04:11.16]said the launch over Japan was "not a productive path forward" [04:16.32]but Washington is still open to talks.
