[00:10.56]The Palestinians say that the textbooks [00:14.04]have been censored by the Israelis. [00:17.04]They say the books are important to their history, [00:21.24]religion, and heritage and should not be changed. [00:26.20]But Israeli officials say the textbooks contained material [00:31.04]that could incite violence. [00:34.24]Recently, protesters gave out copies [00:37.76]of the uncensored textbooks [00:39.76]outside of a school in East Jerusalem. [00:43.08]In mid-September, Palestinian protesters [00:46.60]led a one-day strike. [00:49.36]Many parents demonstrated, carrying banners with slogans [00:54.56]including: "No to the Israelization of education". [01:01.32]Palestinians shared examples of the changes [01:04.52]made by Israeli censors on social media. [01:08.56]One change removed part of an Arabic poem [01:12.80]that talked about an Israeli security checkpoint. [01:16.72]Another change removed information about treaties [01:21.32]that divided the Middle East in the past. [01:24.32]And a third removed an image of a key, [01:28.12]which is the symbol of Palestinian refugees. [01:32.48]But Israeli officials gave their own examples. [01:37.36]The officials said they changed an exercise [01:41.16]asking children to name Palestinians held in "the occupation's prisons" [01:47.28]to one that asks them to name the bird that is a sign of peace. [01:53.28]Another change removed words accusing Israel [01:58.20]of destroying Palestinians' heritage and stealing art works. [02:03.92]The textbook also contained a map that did not include the word Israel. [02:09.96]In July, Israeli officials wanted to take away the licenses of six schools. [02:18.20]The officials said they had given the schools one year [02:22.48]to use an approved version of the Palestinian Authority's curriculum. [02:28.80]A city official said Israelis offered the schools a choice [02:34.28]of using the Israeli curriculum, but Palestinians disagree. [02:39.88]A 2016 report by the Palestinian Academic Society [02:45.16]for the Study of International Affairs commented on the issue. [02:50.08]It said Israeli officials have used financial incentives [02:55.08]to pressure East Jerusalem schools to teach the Israeli curriculum. [03:01.28]Israel captured East Jerusalem in 1967 and later annexed it. [03:07.84]The move was not internationally recognized. [03:12.64]It is estimated that Palestinians [03:15.40]make up 38 percent of Jerusalem's population. [03:20.08]Five percent of them are Israeli citizens. [03:24.24]Palestinians consider East Jerusalem the capital [03:29.16]of a future Palestinian state [03:31.88]that would include the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. [03:37.32]Parents and teachers have mostly blocked attempts [03:41.40]to use Israeli-approved teaching materials in East Jerusalem. [03:46.56]That part of the city began using a Palestinian curriculum in the 1990s. [03:53.56]Reuters reports that a city official said 15 percent [03:59.52]of East Jerusalem's student population is taught the Israeli curriculum. [04:05.64]He said 10 years ago, it was three percent. [04:10.76]Tareq Akash is a parent who worries about that increase. [04:15.92]He fears people may no longer remember [04:19.28]the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians [04:23.92]in the 1948 war that led to the creation of Israel. [04:29.24]"We will not allow the brainwashing of our children," [04:34.16]he said at last Monday's demonstration. [04:37.52]I'm Andrew Smith. 更多听力请访问51VOA.COM
