[00:17.44]Rescue teams from more than 20 countries [00:22.20]continue to search for both survivors and those killed. [00:30.80]Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan [00:35.28]visited a "tent city" in Kahramanmaras, [00:40.72]where people forced from their homes are living. [00:47.08]He admitted the Turkish government's response [00:51.56]to the disaster at first had some problems. [00:57.28]However, he promised [00:59.68]that no one would "be left in the streets." [01:05.32]Many people in both countries are still waiting for help. [01:13.04]This includes areas isolated by Syria's ongoing civil war. [01:22.44]With thousands of collapsed buildings, [01:27.32]it is not clear how many people [01:31.00]might still be trapped under the rubble. [01:36.16]Road closures and other damage have made it difficult [01:42.72]for rescue teams to reach all the areas that need help. [01:50.48]Cold weather is also making the situation [01:54.96]more difficult for both victims and rescue teams. [02:02.48]In the Turkish city of Malatya, [02:06.64]former reporter Ozal Pikal helped with the rescue efforts. [02:14.92]He said he believed at least some of the victims froze to death [02:22.16]as temperatures fell to minus 6 degrees Celsius. [02:28.92]He added, "Our hands cannot pick up anything [02:34.08]because of the cold. Work machines are needed." [02:39.84]Many survivors in Turkey have had to sleep in cars, [02:45.72]outside, or in government shelters. [02:51.48]"We don't have a tent, we don't have a heating stove, [02:58.48]we don't have anything. Our children are in bad shape. [03:05.80]We are all getting wet under the rain," [03:10.04]said 27-year-old Aysan Kurt. [03:16.00]"We did not die from hunger or the earthquake, [03:20.44]but we will die freezing from the cold." [03:26.24]Polish rescuers told reporters with Poland's TVN24 [03:34.64]that low temperatures were delaying rescue efforts. [03:41.64]However, two firefighters said the fact that most people [03:48.48]were in bed under warm covers when the earthquake struck [03:55.04]could help their chances of survival. [04:00.60]Stories of rescues continued to provide hope [04:05.96]that some people still trapped might be found alive. [04:13.16]A crying newborn baby still connected [04:17.16]by the umbilical cord to her mother, who was killed, [04:22.48]was rescued Monday in Syria. [04:28.12]In Turkey's Kahramanmaras, [04:31.44]rescuers pulled a 3-year-old boy from the rubble. [04:38.28]Erdogan said Turkey's death toll passed 9,000. [04:45.44]The Syrian Health Ministry said the death toll [04:49.76]in government-held areas is more than 1,200. [04:57.56]In addition, at least 1,400 people [05:02.48]have died in the rebel-held northwest. [05:08.72]That number comes from the volunteer rescue group [05:13.24]known as the White Helmets. [05:17.08]Syrian officials said the bodies of more than 100 Syrians [05:23.48]who died during the earthquake in Turkey [05:27.72]were brought back home for burial. [05:31.92]Mazen Alloush, an official on the Syrian side of the border, [05:39.04]said 20 more bodies were on their way, [05:43.88]adding that all of them were Syrian refugees [05:49.52]who fled the civil war. [05:53.56]The Syrian civil war has made rescue efforts in that country difficult. [06:01.36]Rebel-controlled areas near the Turkish border are isolated [06:07.64]and surrounded by Russian-backed military forces. [06:14.56]Syria is also under Western sanctions because of the war. [06:22.24]However, the European Union (EU) [06:26.32]said Wednesday that Syria had finally asked for help [06:31.84]for the victims of the earthquake. [06:37.80]The EU also said its sanctions against the government [06:43.80]would not affect the aid it gives to Syria. [06:50.88]I'm Andrew Smith. 更多听力请访问51VOA.COM
