The world's two largest democracies, India and the United States, have pledged to broaden cooperation in counter-terrorism and trade while confronting global challenges. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton launched the inaugural U.S-India Strategic Dialogue in Washington Thursday with praise for India as a rising global and economic power.

Clinton called for a new stage in the U.S.-India partnership, one focused on collaboration in the areas of regional security, defense, clean energy and trade. She said the dialogue will also address doubts on both sides, including India's concerns about the future of Afghanistan and U.S. concerns about India's willingness to embrace economic reforms. Indian Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna said both nations have a stake in peace and stability in South Asia, noting the importance of combining efforts to fight terrorism and extremism.
