EA freight train crashed into a stationary passenger train in central India early Monday, killing at least 21 people. Railway workers pulled trapped passengers from mangled train compartments at the Badarwas station in Madya Pradesh state. At least 50 people were injured.

Officials say the freight train was on the wrong track when it collided with the passenger train during heavy rain. Railway authorities were trying to determine how both trains ended up on the same track. India's heavily used rail network is one of the world's largest, with some 9,000 passenger trains carrying 18 million people every day. There are about 300 Indian rail accidents every year.
